Respite

You have a very demanding role as a caregiver.  It takes courage to face the unknowns of each day.  As a caregiver, you need to take care of yourself.  You need to take time for yourself.  Seek help from others, even though your loved one may object.  Continue to do things that are just for you.  It's OK!!  See a movie, start a new hobby, join a new club, or take a class.  Exercise and nutrition are as important for you as they are for your loved one.  Find someone that you can talk to openly about your frustration and other feelings.  A support group or program is a good place to connect with others that share burdens like yours.

There are services in the area that can help at home when you are away or at work.  Home care agencies can send staff to be with your loved one.  One of the agencies offers an Alzheimer Specialist Service that will do activities in the home.

There are Adult Day Centers operating in the community that can offer a safe structured environment for your loved one to attend during the day, Monday through Friday. Transportation can be arranged to and from the centers. Meals and activities are an integral part of the programming. One site offers a bathing service.

The Community Based Residential Listing (CBRF) has ALZ as a target group if they are equipped to help Alzheimer's clients.  Some Community Based Residential Facilities (CBRFs) and Residential Care Apartment Complexes (RCACs) may take clients on an as needed basis, such as a day, an occasion weekend, or for a longer period while the caregiver is in the hospital or out of town. Clients who have been in Re-habilitation programs are often times not yet ready to return home. Respite care can be provided during this transitional time by Assisted Living Facilities. Refer to the lists below. You will need to call each facility to determine if "Respite" care can be provided at any given time.
