Caregiving Relationships

Caregiving Relationships for people who care for adults is a curriculum designed to reduce the emotional pressures associated with caregiving. As caregivers struggle to meet the immediate needs of the care-receiver, strong emotional pressures can intensify. Such stressors can contribute to caregiver fatigue, illness, and sometimes, abusive behavior. The goal of the curriculum is to prevent elder abuse and to strengthen relationships between the cregiver and the care-receiver. The curriculum provides caregivers with information to relieve stress before it is necessary to seek help.

Most sessions consist of an introductory activity, "hands-on" learning experience, and discussions. The curriculum features many brochures to enable participants to follow up on concepts presented and follow through with personal committments.

Topics include:

Mixed Emotions

(goal is to recognize that it is okay to have negative feelings as a caregiver)

Relationships in Caregiving

(goal is to recognize that relationships change as care-receivers become more dependent)

Loss and Grief Issues

(deals with the importance of building support systems and coping strategies)

Speak Clearly - Listen Carefully

(understanding the benefits of effective communication)

Caregivers Need Care Too

(recognizing the warning signs of stress - how and where to find respite)

Services and Professionals

(Understanding the steps to assess what services are needed for the care-receiver)

Many families are faced with the care of multiple generations. They may not have models of caring to follow so they are unsure of how to handle the new responsibilities. Caregiving often begins slowly with giving a little help and gradually increasing to providing assistance with activities for daily living. Many are not prepared for the difficult tasks that await them as a caregiver.

Caregiving Relationships can help manage the emotional strain.

These sessions are held on an "as needed" basis. Call our office if you are interested in registering.
